Once I got my head around the fact that I frequently spend a grand on a sandwich and you say ‘hello’ for ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’ (it’s confusing), I’ve realised I’ve pretty much spent everyday here drinking. It’s definitely a party city.
I was glad to meet up again with Jason and Tom here, who I met in Bratislava. They have just finished their charity cycle here from England and have the best (worst) cyclist tan I’ve ever seen. If your interested in hearing a different cyclist’s perspective, here’s a link to their blog.
We’ve got up to a lot of no good here, including a booze cruise and a crazy pool party in a spa but the best thing was definitely when we turned up on Margit Sziget (basically this massive pedestrianised park) with cans of beer in our hands, with another bag full of beer and were somehow allowed to drive a golf buggy (£2 each!) to tear up the island – it’s funny because your not even allowed to drink in public here (although I’ve heard the police don’t care, they probably do it too)
If your boring and don’t like parties, Budapest is still a great city. It’s actually a combination of three towns – Buda, Obuda and Pest and there’s plenty to keep yourself busy with here. There’s over 100 natural hot springs, miles of underground caves beneath the city and a plentiful supply of Prague-style buildings to amuse you. The cuisine here is some of the best in Europe too and some of the cheapest.
So after a week of 30+ degrees heat in the city, I think it’s about time to get the cycling shoes back on and head towards Croatia. I’m not sure what lies ahead. Probably not much in terms of civilisation, so blog posts will be sparse.
