Today was a bit crazy. So I crossed the border finally and find myself in Poland and can’t find anywhere to change my Euros into the Polish money (Zloty) and can’t find a cash machine. The only food I have with me is a bag of rice, some bread and a pot of jam. As it turns out Poznan, the city I am going to was a bit further away than I thought. I changed maps today to the Polish one, and forgot that the scale of the map also changed. I had already booked the hostel and felt obliged to get there no matter what. So I cycled 137 miles today fueled entirely by rice, bread and jam. If you put the jam in the rice it actually almost makes rice pudding! I left at 10.30AM and arrived in Poznan at 1AM. I was pedalling on the bike for so long there was not enough room on my bike computer screen to fit in over 10 hours so it reset itself to zero. My butt hurts like hell.
It’s cool being here because I couldn’t help but feel that Germany is almost exactly the same as the UK but they drive on the other side of the road and speak German. Poland is completely different. In Germany when you cycle about 25-35miles you come to a city; here there is nothing. I cycled for 90 miles in Poland and saw ONE cash machine. There are only little villages dotted around and occasionally a big city, there’s no in-between.
The drivers here are a bit mental too. I said my prayers tonight, cycling in the dark with no streetlights on a Saturday night with potentially drunk Polish drivers kicking about. I don’t know if it’s because the roads are smaller it just feels more dangerous or if they are actually going faster.
Anyway I’m appreciating my survival a lot more tonight and decided to reward myself by eating anything other than rice and got a Donner kebab, a baguette, 2 chocolate bars and a beer for £3.50. Stuff is cheap here.
This made me laugh :p 137 miles! Thats amazing!! Poland sounds mental but i’m glad your alive :p xxxxxx
